The Community Development Team recently supported the Antoin Akpom Achievements Foundation at their annual awards ceremony at the Abbey Sports and Leisure Gym in Leicester City.
The Antoin Akpom Achievements Foundation was established after the death of Antoin Akpom, a community organiser who spearheaded a number of local initiatives aimed at helping young people through sport and dance. The Foundation aims to continue Akpom’s legacy through workshops and events that challenge behaviours among young people, help empower them through developing new skills, and ultimately change their lives for the better.
The awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of people who have made significant contributions to their communities throughout the year. From young people who showed tenacity and dedication in mastering a musical instrument to local sports coaches with a passion for helping others keep fit and healthy, the awards showcased some of the incredible trailblazers who are making a difference in Leicester City.
The awards ceremony was absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much to the Antoin Akpom Achievements Foundation for helping shine a light on the talent and selflessness of so many wonderful people in Leicester City. It was particularly rewarding seeing the coaches at the SOCOPA multi sports coaching group recognised for all their kindness and hard work. An all-around fabulous evening!Neetu Squire, Head of Community Development at Leicestershire Cares
Among the award winners were six boys from the Somali Community Parents Association (SOCOPA). Just this year, Leicestershire Cares helped these young people attain qualification in Multi Sports Coaching so they could establish their own training group. We also partnered up with Sytner Group, who generously took the time to hold a raffle to raise money for the group, as well as providing the boys with their own coaching uniforms. Well done lads!
With the awards handed out, our Community Development Team finished their evening with a fantastic three-course meal and some inspiring dance and music performances, including a singing policeman, no less! The Team also had the opportunity to catch up with our community group partners, local councillors, and representatives from the Leicestershire Police who joined in with the event.
The Community Development Team would like to thank the Antoin Akpom Achievements Foundation for hosting an exceptional awards evening and for all the work that they do to support communities in Leicester City. We are proud of our work building collaborations between businesses and community groups to support initiatives, such as the SOCOPA multi sports coaching group, that help to build a safer, more inclusive Leicestershire where no one is left behind.
