During the October half-term, Leicestershire Cares, in partnership with St. Margaret’s Pastures, organised a successful employability day for our football group, consisting of young, unaccompanied asylum-seeking men. This event aimed not only to enhance their job-seeking skills but also to address the wider challenges they face in securing employment. For these young people, finding meaningful work is more than simply achieving financial stability—it is a vital pathway to independence, integration, and self-worth as they work to build new lives in a different country.
The day provided an invaluable opportunity for the young men to connect with various employment resources, explore career options, and learn directly from industry experts. Reed Employment and Leicester College offered crucial employment support and careers guidance, delivering personalised advice to help the attendees understand the UK job market and the steps they can take to succeed.
One of the day’s highlights was a practical workshop where each young participant created their own CV, giving them a tangible resource to use in job applications. For young asylum seekers, who may lack traditional support networks, this hands-on experience was especially impactful, equipping them with confidence and a sense of preparedness.
It was great to see so many of our young boys turn up and get involved in the activities understanding what employment opportunities are available to them!

The event included a generous lunch provided by Samworth Brothers – Bradgate Bakery Walker & Son, ensuring that our 24 attendees felt well looked-after throughout the day. Additionally, ME Sports kindly subsidised much-needed shin pads, delivered in time to support our football group’s activities and foster a strong sense of community and encouragement.
Events like this are essential for the development and integration of unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people. By helping them build employability skills and form connections with local organisations, we not only support their immediate needs but also empower them to contribute to society and shape their own futures with resilience and hope.
