Young people have a lot to say about the world – and function in a world where we express ourselves through the mediums of video, music and podcasts – recently at Cares we have given a lot of thought about engaging young people through art, music and multimedia.
Funded by the Peoples’s Postcode Trust, our Exhibit project provides cross cutting opportunities for disadvantaged young people across Leicester and Leicestershire.
We endeavour to connect young people across our projects with arts provisions to provide them with a creative platform from which they can tell their story and express themselves using the mediums of visual art, music, podcasts and animation.
Our women’s empowerment group works with care experienced young women at risk of CSE to identify their strengths and improve confidence. Through Exhibit we have engaged our group with a comic book artist who has worked over several sessions to develop characters that represent our young women’s strengths.

Through our neighbourhood youth work we are taking music, photography, multimedia and podcasts on the road, delivering in the Haymarket Shopping Centre in Leicester and in collaboration with PACE in Loughborough. Aaron Todd our Youth Development Officer is working with a number of hard-to-reach young people to create films, beats and devise their own podcast conversations surrounding issues that affect their lives.
So what next?
We will be working with a number of our young people who are involved with our projects – and identifying unique ways they can use art for both expression and wellbeing – watch this space!
The year long project will end with a number of showcase and exhibitions which we endeavour to be both in person and online and will truly shine a light on the creative talents of our young people.
