Last year, with funding from The Thomas Pocklington Trust, Leicestershire Cares Education Team ran a project to adapt our education resources to ensure they’re inclusive for use with young people with a visual impairment. As part of this we ran a pilot employability programme for visually impaired school students, developed a pack for use in schools and a pack aimed at raising awareness in the workplace. We launched this pack at our recent Champions’ meeting.
As part of the project, we worked with a steering group made up of several businesses who identified the main areas of concern in employing people with a visual impairment. These were:
- Health and Safety practices
- Key considerations for colleagues / managers of the person with a visual impairment
- Sources of support, information and signposting to helpful resources
The pack gives details of the employability project, the context and successes. It provides detailed information on Health and Safety Practices, key considerations for colleagues and managers, and signposting to sources of support and information. We hope to share this pack as widely as possible to help break down the perceived barriers of employing people who are blind or have a visual impairment.
