Just before the schools finished for the Summer, three wonderful volunteers through Altogether Now, visited Forest Way School in Coalville to deliver a careers talk session for their SEND students. The volunteers delivered around a 15 minute presentation each on their career journey, their company and their current role. All of the volunteers were fantastic in explaining what they do to a group of students with a variety of interests and abilities. In preparation, the students had done some work around careers and in particular, the roles of our volunteers which was fantastic as it allowed for an in depth Q&A session.
Altogether Now Project also went into Rawlins Academy just before the Summer break to support their careers day. Two volunteers delivered 1:1 mock interviews for a class of Y10 students who did brilliantly. Both of these individuals stood and introduced themselves to the group beforehand, giving some insight on their own personal career journey which helped the students to feel a bit more at ease when attending their interview. Before leaving the school, the volunteers and Ross from Altogether Now, stood and delivered a brief Careers Talk to a group of Post-16 students as well as answered some questions about further education and the world of work.
We had a visit from local businesses organised by Ross at Leicestershire Cares. I can't thank the volunteers enough as they were from a solicitors, construction company and barristers which our pupils would never usually have the chance to meet. Our students are 16-19 years old at a special needs school and the staff spoke with respect and appreciation for the pupils, and answered questions and described their job roles wonderfully. The pupils have been discussing the speakers multiple times over the past week and it really has left a lovely impression on them. We hope to work with Leicestershire Cares again on future projects to introduce our young people to the world of work and support them into adult life.
