Whisking Up Confidence: “Together We Bake” Brings Skills and Smiles

27 Feb 2026

The kitchen was full of energy, laughter, and the smell of freshly baked cupcakes as the Altogether Now Project hosted its latest Together We Bake session, a celebration of teamwork, creativity, and confidence-building.

Supported by three fantastic volunteers from Hinckley & Rugby Building Society, the session brought young people together in a hands-on activity designed to build key life and employability skills in a fun and supportive environment.

The Altogether Now Project, which supports young people with SEND, focuses on creating opportunities where individuals can grow in confidence, develop independence, and learn practical skills and this session delivered exactly that.

The volunteers were really nice! The woman I worked with was lovely, Sue I think her name was? She was awesome

Working side by side as one team, volunteers and young people collaborated throughout the session, building strong communication and trust as they baked together. Each team focused on creating a different style of cupcake; vanilla, chocolate, and cookies & cream. With everyone playing an active role in following the recipe, measuring ingredients, and supporting one another.

Rather than leading, the volunteers integrated seamlessly into the groups, encouraging participation, sharing ideas, and helping to create a relaxed and inclusive environment where everyone felt comfortable to contribute. This approach allowed young people to take ownership of their tasks while still feeling supported, strengthening both confidence and teamwork skills.

After baking, the creativity really came to life. Each team produced a batch of 12 cupcakes before coming together to pipe, decorate, and customise their creations. There was a real sense of pride as personal touches were added and the finished cupcakes looked as incredible as they tasted.

Baking took me back to the fun times when I did it back in school, it was fun working together with the volunteers and especially with the bright ideas we came up with

Beyond the baking itself, the session highlighted the wider impact of activities like this for young people with SEND. From following instructions and developing practical skills, to building communication and social confidence, every stage of the activity provided valuable opportunities for growth in a supportive setting.

A huge thank you goes to the volunteers from Hinckley & Rugby Building Society for their time, enthusiasm, and continued support. Their ability to work alongside the young people and build genuine connections made the session truly special.

With confidence rising, skills developing, and plenty of sweet treats to enjoy, Together We Bake was a perfect example of how meaningful experiences can create lasting impact, one cupcake at a time.
