Unlocking Potential

26 Nov 2025

Leicestershire Cares recently delivered two employability events at alternative provisions that not only supported young people preparing for their next steps but also offered volunteers a deeper understanding of the diverse talents found within these alternative education settings.

The first event took place at West Gate School, a SEND provision, where volunteers from CGI and Leicestershire Library services joined the Leicestershire Cares Education team to deliver mock interviews for Year 10 and Year 11 students. Later in the week, the team visited Millgate School, an SEMH provision, where we were joined by six volunteers from Hinckley & Rugby Building Society and an independent retiree.

Across both schools, volunteers were struck by the students’ honesty, creativity and determination. Many shared that taking part challenged their assumptions about SEND and SEMH settings, opening their eyes to the breadth of talent, ambition and potential found within them. For many volunteers, it was a powerful reminder that young people in alternative provisions are too often overlooked, yet have so much to offer.

A central element of the mock interview experience is a question around disclosing needs or disabilities and discussing what reasonable adjustments might support them in future education or employment. It encourages students to reflect on their strengths and challenges, while helping them practice self-advocacy, an essential skill for adulthood. It also sparks meaningful conversations with volunteers about the importance of inclusive workplaces.

These interactions reinforced a message shared by both schools and volunteers alike: needing additional support does not diminish a young person’s value or their ability to contribute. Instead, it highlights the need for environments - both educational and professional - where differences are understood, accommodated and respected.

The events at West Gate and Millgate served as a powerful reminder that a society where everyone can thrive is a society that benefits us all. By taking the time to listen, encourage and invest in young people who may simply need a little extra help, volunteers played an important role in championing a more inclusive and compassionate future workforce.
