Together We Thrive: Drumming, Creativity and Conversations on Family
Last Saturday, we brought our Women’s Empowerment Group, Together we Thrive Project, back together for our fourth session, which focused on a creative and reflective focus group workshop.
The session was led by PhD student Leanne, whose study explored the question: “What does family and childhood mean to you?” The workshop gave our young people the opportunity to share their views, experiences, and personal thoughts around family, childhood, and the impact these have had on their lives. Alongside this, Jo led a fun creative activity, making Twirlies followed by an engaging African drumming workshop.
The first half of the session focused on group discussion and reflection. Leanne facilitated the focus group, creating a safe and open space where the young women were able to lead with their voices and share both positive and negative experiences around family and childhood. Group agreements were discussed at the start of the session to ensure everyone felt supported, respected, and comfortable throughout. This allowed participants to open, express themselves honestly, and learn from one another through meaningful conversation and shared experiences.
The second half of the session shifted into creativity and fun, with Jo leading arts and crafts activities through making Twirlies, followed by an African drumming workshop. Participants created “Twirlies,” which symbolised keeping away bad energy and bringing in positivity. The drumming session brought lots of energy to the room, with everyone getting involved, learning different rhythms, and enjoying the cultural experience of African drumming together.
Overall, it was a fun, reflective, and empowering session where participants were able to learn, share, and connect with one another. A huge thank you to Leanne and Jo for facilitating such an engaging and meaningful workshop for our young people.
