As part of our Team Challenge programme, staff from Walker & Son and Samworth's Ashton Green site joined forces to give back to their community through a garden transformation.
Volunteers donated their time, tools, and energy to revitalise the centre’s outdoor area—turning it into a vibrant, welcoming garden for day centre guests to enjoy. Over two sunny days, the teams repainted several wooden outbuildings, including a mock café, sweet shop, and pub. They also refreshed the garden furniture and planted an array of colourful flowers, generously donated by a Samworth employee who manages a community allotment in New Parks.
The aim of the project was to create a beautiful, therapeutic space for everyone who uses the centre—a goal clearly achieved. The newly refurbished garden now offers a peaceful yet stimulating environment where guests can relax and enjoy the outdoors.
“We have been planning this for a while in collaboration with our Ashton Green site and it was fantastic to see it all come together. All our volunteers from both sites worked really hard over the two days, there was lots of painting and Lee from Ashton Green did an amazing job with the flowers and planting. Doing this challenge with Ashton Green was great for us, it bought different colleagues together and we were able to make a real impact to the centre, who were overjoyed with the end result.”

Thanks to this collaborative effort, the day centre guests and staff now have a stunning garden space to enjoy—proof of what can be achieved when people come together for a shared cause.
We had an incredible couple of days. From painting and DIY to planting fresh flowers, it was all hands on deck as our team came together to give the garden a well-deserved refresh. The sun was shining, the teamwork was inspiring, and the smiles said it all. A fantastic effort by everyone involved—thank you to all who joined us for such a rewarding and meaningful project!
