Building Futures: Mock Interview Events Empower Students and Volunteers Alike

We recently had the opportunity to deliver two impactful mock interview events in alternate provision settings. These events, designed to support young people who may not thrive in mainstream education, provided a valuable platform for students to gain experience, build confidence, and start thinking about their futures.

Each session brought together local business volunteers and students for a series of one-on-one mock interviews, simulating real-life scenarios. The students were encouraged to reflect on their strengths, practice articulating their goals, and respond to constructive feedback. For many, this was their first formal interaction with professionals outside of school, and the experience was both empowering and eye-opening. We had volunteers from Sytner, KPMG, Nelsons Law and Caterpillars - all local businesses who champion employee volunteering.

The presence of business volunteers in the school setting plays a crucial role in raising aspirations. Their involvement gives students insight into the world of work and helps them understand what employers look for, not just in qualifications, but in attitude, communication, and self-presentation. These interactions also help demystify the interview process and foster a sense of possibility. Students walk away not only with improved interview skills, but also with a renewed sense of confidence and motivation.

Please pass on my love and thanks to your amazing team! Our students really enjoyed the session and are eager to participate more with yourselves!! It was such a lovely day

Importantly, the experience is equally rewarding for the volunteers. Many reported that engaging with the students gave them a fresh perspective and a sense of fulfilment, knowing they were making a tangible difference. It’s an opportunity to give back to the community while developing their own communication and mentoring skills. The dynamic conversations often challenge assumptions and create moments of real human connection that stay with the volunteers long after the event ends.

Our session today involved providing mock interviews for some of the students to build confidence and experience in interview settings and provide them with the foundation skills to consider heading out into the world of work. We were very lucky to be able to hold our interviews outside in the glorious sunshine, which was an absolute treat to say the least! I was so impressed, not only by what Enstruct offer students here, but also by the students themselves who were bright and engaging and a joy to get to know for an hour or two. Thanks to the Enstruct team for welcoming us, giving an incredible tour, and sharing your passion for this wonderful project with us, and to the students for welcoming us and getting involved

At Leicestershire Cares, we believe that employability support should be inclusive and tailored to the needs of all young people. Many of the young people in alternate provisions face unique barriers to employment and further education, and too often, post-16 support is fragmented or lacking entirely. That’s why the work being done in these settings is so vital. By creating safe, supportive environments that understand and adapt to students’ individual needs, these institutions are not only delivering meaningful careers guidance, they are also instilling confidence and ambition in young people who are frequently overlooked. Events like mock interviews, when designed with inclusivity in mind, can be transformative in helping SEND students realise their potential and take the first steps toward fulfilling, independent futures.

Volunteering in SEND schools and alternate provisions is not only impactful, it is often eye-opening in the best possible way. There’s a common misconception that young people in these settings are difficult to engage or lack ambition, but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. These students are bright, creative, resilient, and full of potential. What they often need is someone who believes in them, listens without judgement, and takes the time to understand their unique strengths. By showing up, volunteers can play a key role in breaking down barriers and broadening horizons. The experience is incredibly rewarding, and many volunteers find themselves inspired by the determination and insight of the young people they meet. This is not just about giving back, it’s about recognising talent in places where it’s too often overlooked.

Thank you for involving me in this programme. It meant a lot to feel like I was making a difference to the young people involved and helping build skills I take for granted

If you’ve ever considered volunteering your time to support young people, there’s never been a more important moment to step forward, especially in SEND schools and alternate provisions. These settings are full of incredible students who are often underestimated, but who thrive when given the chance to engage with professionals who see their potential. By volunteering at a mock interview event or careers session, you can help young people build the confidence, skills, and motivation they need to move forward. You don’t need specialist training and you don’t need to be a careers expert - just someone who’s willing to listen, share your experiences, and offer encouragement. Join us at Leicestershire Cares and be part of creating a more inclusive and hopeful future for every young person. Get in touch today and be part of something powerful!
