"With the help of this workshop, I feel prepared to handle my own money and I will make sure I set up a budgeting spreadsheet to help me!"
Care Experienced Young Person
Last week, Leicestershire Cares hosted a budgeting workshop for care leavers and SEND young people, kindly facilitated by our Business Member, Hinckley & Rugby Building Society.
The workshop provided a welcoming and practical space for young people to build their confidence and knowledge around managing money and making informed financial decisions.
Throughout the session, we explored a range of topics designed to support young people in developing important financial skills, including:
Understanding different types of bank accounts and what they can be used for.
Budgeting and how to keep track of money coming in and going out.
Setting saving goals and developing positive saving habits.
Understanding legal jargon and some of the financial terminology young people may come across.
Spotting and avoiding scams, including how to recognise warning signs and protect personal information.
Looking after your money, with practical advice on staying financially safe and making informed choices.
For care leavers and SEND young people, having access to clear, accessible financial information can be particularly valuable as they navigate greater independence and manage their own finances.
We were delighted to see young people engaging with the session, asking questions and sharing their experiences. Workshops like this help turn what can sometimes feel like complicated or intimidating financial topics into something practical, understandable and relevant to everyday life.
A huge thank you to Hinckley & Rugby Building Society for sharing their time, knowledge and expertise with our young people, and for supporting Leicestershire Cares through our Business Membership programme.
We look forward to continuing to create opportunities that help young people develop the skills, confidence and knowledge they need to thrive.
Together, we can help young people feel more confident about their money and their future.
