When WF first joined the Leicestershire Cares youth group, he was quiet, reserved, and unsure about the direction he wanted to take in life after he had recently moved to the UK from Hong Kong. Like many young people, he had ideas and ambitions but lacked the confidence, networks, and opportunities to bring them to life. Over time, and with the support of the Leicestershire cares LFR group, WF’s journey has been one of remarkable personal growth, fuelled by his passion for music and digital media.
From the beginning, WF showed a strong interest in creative expression. Through the youth group’s workshops, he was introduced to digital tools for podcasting, recording, and live performance. At first, WF was hesitant to step up to the microphone, preferring to stay in the background. However, with encouragement from peers and facilitators, he gradually started contributing his voice and ideas. His first real breakthrough came when he helped to record a podcast on issues facing young people in Leicester. Speaking openly about topics that mattered to him, WF found a platform to be heard and respected. This experience gave him a new sense of confidence - he realised his voice had value.
As his confidence grew, WF began experimenting more with music production. At the youth group he began developing both technical and creative skills. He learned how to mix tracks, record vocals, and produce content that was polished and engaging. In the process, he discovered the power of music and media not only as tools for self-expression but also to connect with others. Collaborating with fellow participants, WF co-created songs that were later displayed at youth events and community performances. Standing in front of an audience and performing live was another milestone - an experience that pushed him out of his comfort zone and proved to him that he could thrive under pressure.
Beyond creativity, WF also benefited from the networking opportunities provided through Leicestershire Cares. Meeting local professionals, volunteers, and community leaders opened doors he never thought possible. His work on podcasts and performances gave him tangible experience and a portfolio he could display when applying for opportunities. Staff and volunteers supported him in refining his CV, practicing interview skills, and building the confidence to put himself forward.
This combination of creativity, practical experience, and mentorship eventually led to employment opportunities. WF secured work off his own back but using the skills and confidence he had developed through the youth group. He often reflects on how the journey with Leicestershire Cares gave him the tools to believe in himself, communicate effectively, and seize opportunities.
Today, WF is not only employed but also continues to pursue music and digital media as a passion. He has become a role model for newer members of the youth group, showing them that growth is possible with commitment and the right support. His story demonstrates how youth projects that combine creativity, community, and employability skills can transform lives.
