T.W. joined the VIP Project seeking support to access further education, with the specific goal of securing a place at college. Prior to engaging with the Leicestershire Cares, T.W. had faced difficulties navigating the college application process and had experienced a lack of support, which impacted his confidence and progress.
The initial appointment focused on identifying T.W.’s aspirations and areas requiring support. He expressed a strong interest in pursuing a career in either bricklaying or motor vehicle mechanics and demonstrated a clear sense of direction. However, his previous applications to college had not been successful, and he felt that his additional educational needs were not adequately recognised.
At the time of referral, T.W. was attending an alternative provision and working towards achieving his Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths both of which were essential for entry onto his chosen courses. A tailored support plan was developed, and necessary documentation was completed to ensure T.W. had a clear and structured pathway towards further education.
A review of T.W.’s qualifications confirmed that he met the entry requirements for the courses he was interested in. A follow-up session was arranged to conduct college research and complete applications. T.W. applied for a bricklaying course at South Wigston College and a motor vehicle course at Leicester College. Despite previous negative experiences with the college system, T.W. approached the process with renewed determination, supported by his engaged and encouraging family.
To further support his transition, contact was made with both colleges to ensure they were aware of T.W.’s needs and to confirm that appropriate provisions could be made. At the time, T.W. was in the process of securing an updated Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) to reflect his current support requirements, particularly relating to his autism and need for routine and structure.
T.W. was invited to an interview and campus tour at South Wigston College. The college made necessary adjustments to accommodate his needs, and T.W. left the visit feeling confident and optimistic. He was later offered a place.
T.W.’s journey reflects the value of tailored support, persistence, and collaborative working. His proactive attitude, combined with a strong support network, enabled him to overcome barriers and achieve his goal of securing a place in further education.
We did attend the appointment at South Wigston, thank you for arranging that. It went really well and just got to wait for another appointment to go in for interview and meet more staff members. T.W is really looking forward to studying there from September”.
