M.N. joined the VIP Project seeking support to access employment, with the specific goal of securing a role in the tech sector. He also wanted educational guidance on becoming a pilot and exploring university options. Prior to engaging with Leicestershire Cares, M.N. had faced difficulties as a victim of violence, which had impacted his confidence and ability to go out in public spaces.
The initial appointment focused on introducing M.N. to the support available and identifying his aspirations. He expressed a strong interest in aviation and technology but felt uncertain about his employability skills. Together, we discussed the support that could be offered, including CV development, mock interviews, guidance, job-searching, and advice on university options. At the time of referral, M.N. was already attending college but was keen to progress into employment alongside his studies.
A CV session was arranged to strengthen his applications. At just 17, M.N. He had already gained valuable experience, including repairing bikes and laptops, and working as a Fraisi interpreter. His CV was updated to reflect these skills and achievements. During this process, he also shared that, with the support of his VIP worker, he had successfully secured a place on the competitive Vayyu Foundation programme, where he gained the opportunity to fly a plane. This was added to his CV to highlight his commitment and passion for aviation
The next stage of support involved a job-searching session. M.N. was unfamiliar with platforms such as Indeed and LinkedIn, so guidance was provided on how to create accounts, upload his CV, and search effectively for vacancies. During the session, he also developed his first cover letter, gaining an understanding of its importance in job applications. With this new knowledge, M.N. applied for roles independently and showed initiative by printing copies of his CV to deliver to local businesses.
Alongside this, M.N. attended the All-Things Investment Seminar delivered by our business members where he gained valuable insights into financial literacy, money management, and future planning. This experience broadened his awareness of opportunities beyond employment and reinforced the importance of building wider life skills to support his ambitions.
More recently, M.N. has begun preparing for his driving test and has started to hear back from employers in response to his job applications. His commitment to engaging with support, combined with his growing independence, demonstrates significant progress.
M.N.’s journey reflects the impact of consistent engagement, tailored support, and persistence. By attending appointments regularly, he has developed confidence, strengthened his employability skills, and taken meaningful steps towards both employment and his long-term goal of becoming a pilot. His growth shows the value of providing young people with the right opportunities and guidance to move forward positively.
So grateful for the support I have received here, I now have a better understanding on how to apply for jobs, and create a cover letter. Thank you !
