Three months ago, a young person attending Leicestershire Cares was experiencing a difficult period in their life. Ongoing family pressures and challenges finding the right work had left them feeling depressed, anxious, and uncertain about the future.
During a visit to the organisation, they spoke with youth worker Aaron, who offered reassurance and encouragement. Aaron reminded them that setbacks are temporary and shared the message that “when one door closes, another one opens.” At the time, the young person struggled to fully believe this advice and left still feeling overwhelmed.
However, the following week brought a turning point. They received a phone call confirming that they had been accepted into their dream workplace - an opportunity they had hoped for but never honestly believed would happen. From that moment, things gradually began to improve. Their confidence increased, their anxiety reduced, and they began to see a more positive future for themselves.
Reflecting on the experience, the young person recognised the importance of the support they had received through Leicestershire Cares over the years. The organisation had not only provided emotional support during challenging times, but also created opportunities to meet new people, build confidence, and explore ambitions they had once given up on.
This case study highlights the impact consistent youth work relationships can have on a young person’s wellbeing, resilience, and future aspirations. Through encouragement, trusted support, and access to opportunities, the young person was able to rediscover a dream they had once buried and take positive steps towards achieving it.
