Education Team Update

20 Jan 2022

The Education Team have had a busy Autumn term. With covid regulations in schools temporarily kept to a minimum and less in-school covid testing, there were less interruptions to learning and all our events were delivered as planned with a mixture of in-school and remote events.

We delivered 11 mock interview events with 6 schools. 1 of these was a face-to-face event, delivered in school at The Long Field Academy. Across these 11 events 860 students were supported by 116 volunteers .

I enjoyed engaging with the students and seeing their confidence improve in such a short space of time

A volunteer at Long Field Academy

I and the Year 10 students are sincerely grateful for your professionalism, kind words, support and advice given today. It was an absolute delight to have met you all and I hope you can come to Long Field again - please never underestimate the positive impact you make on young people

Assistant Head at Long Field Academy, Melton

We held 5 employability sessions in schools/colleges (speedy speakers and CV workshops) with 5 volunteers from different businesses. 2 of these were in person and 3 online, engaging with 293 young people. One of these was an in-person careers talk and interview preparation session for SEND students aged 18+ at Sense College, Loughborough. The Number Partners Maths challenge was launched once more for Primary Students across Leicester and Leicestershire and again pupils at Queensmead Primary Academy were outright winners and won a set of Maths games for their school. New Visual impairment project

We’ve also launched a new project funded by the Thomas Pocklington Trust to develop and adapt our education programme activities and resources to ensure they are inclusive to the needs of visually impaired young people. For more information on the project see our article here A Focus on the Future.

Relaunch of Go for Reading

We’re also excited to be relaunching our Go For Reading scheme with volunteers providing paired reading mentoring in schools from the summer term onwards. Go for Reading Relaunch 2022 | Leicestershire Cares

Celebrating volunteer commitment

At the champions lunch the education team presented Michelle Tong of Hinckley and Rugby Building Society with a golden heart for her commitment to education projects and the education focus group meetings.

We’ve had excellent business engagement from our members and non-members this quarter with volunteers participating in careers talks, workshops, interview preparation and interview technique events.

Huge thank you to volunteers from:

The Samworth Brothers Group, PrintPrint, Sytner, HRBS, Leicester City Council, Rock Kitchen Harris, Kier, Lloyd’s Banking Group and British Gas.
