Our Education team has been very busy this term, offering a range of employability activities for secondary schools with the help of our fantastic business volunteers. Nine activities were organised at five different schools and colleges, with volunteers participating remotely or in person.
We ran four successful Speedy Speaker events for Gartree High School where volunteers from Blaby District Council, Joules, Kier, Rock Kitchen Harris, Willmott Dixon, Walkers and new member, PrintPrint gave short inspirational careers talks to pupils.
The Learning and Interpretation Manager for Richard III Centre in Leicester gave an interesting careers talk for pupils at Brookvale Groby Learning Campus. Volunteers from Hinckley and Rugby Building Society and Kier volunteered to support a CV workshop for year 9 pupils at Winstanley School, giving talks on CVs and a Q & A session.
Thank you so much for another fantastic event, it's amazing to see a genuine buzz about careers in our SHINE lessons. Please pass on our thanks to the volunteers for giving up their time today, we appreciate it so much and the feedback from Year 9s and their tutors has been so positive.Mrs B Rumming, The Winstanley School
Volunteers from the NHS, Samworth Brothers – Bradgate Bakery and new member, CPW, gave short careers talks in person to the students at the South Leicestershire Inclusion Partnership - a specialist unit – as well as one-to-one mock interviews.
We also held our first event at Sense College, Loughborough - a ‘preparing for your interview’ workshop attended by 14 young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. We were supported by a wonderful volunteer from Samworth Brothers who gave a short careers talk; even passing around pork pies and pasties!
I think the structure of the course was great and well suited to our students’ ability which is something that I was worried about but all the students actively got involved with the activities. Laura was fantastic as a speaker and I thought she really got the students thinking about the world of work.SENSE College
