Education Team update – our work with Special Educational Needs and Disability schools

16 Mar 2023

The Education team continue to partner with volunteers from business to deliver inspiring employability events and workshops in SEND schools for the We Discover project in partnership with the LLEP Careers Hub.

Very rewarding to support SEN students become more confident in the interviewing process.

Since January we’ve delivered 10 events in workplaces or schools: 4 work tours, 2 interview preparation sessions, 1 Guess my Job and skills session, 1 CV workshop and 2 mock interview sessions. We’ve had 18 volunteers support us from Stepnell, Time Products, Thermo Fisher, Hay’s Recruitment, The Department for Education, NHS, plus special thanks go to the whole team at Hinckley and Rugby Building Society for hosting two work tours and to Beth at Asda, Oadby for hosting the other two!

“I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our morning at Asda Oadby. The class were all engaged and asked relevant questions to Beth. One of the pupils was very proud of himself when a customer asked him where something was and he showed them to the product. He spent some time at the end of the morning talking to Beth about how to apply for a job at Asda, which is fantastic as he doesn’t really get enthusiastic about anything.”

A Focus on the Future – our work with young people with a visual impairment funded by the Thomas Pocklington Trust

The Education team are also excited to launch our info pack for businesses designed to raise awareness of employing people with a visual impairment.

The pack outlines the work we delivered on A Focus on the Future project last year and gives handy info on where to look for support, advice and practical information on making your workplace more inclusive for people with a visual impairment. We will have a large print and digital versions available.
