SocialBox.Biz, a social enterprise, and local charity Reaching People are joining forces to look for unwanted laptops and other IT equipment to help homeless and vulnerable communities.
SocialBox.Biz saves your old, no longer needed yet still usable, laptops (and other IT equipment) from recycling and landfill and redistributes them via Reaching People ensuring the most vulnerable can connect to services, support, family and friends and improve their skills and employment prospects.
It’s a win-win for those serious about the corporate social responsibility, reducing environmental impact and creating a lasting social impact. Once they have received your old IT equipment, SocialBox.Biz removes data using top security standards on site and at the office; upgrades it with open source software and then gets it out via charities across Leicester and Leicestershire.
Reaching People provides 1-2-1 support to a diverse group of vulnerable clients. Through their members and partners, they will be able to provide support at a practical level for disadvantaged groups to budget and make savings; set up email and bank accounts; job search; reduce isolation etc., while building the financial and digital skills that we all need to cope with everyday life and ongoing communication challenges. However, many of vulnerable people from disadvantaged backgrounds cannot afford laptops, some do not even have smart phones, without which, they cannot access services and we cannot deliver support.
The Community and Development team at Leicestershire Cares are supporting this initiative by promoting it to our business members and individuals as well as the wider business community. We truly believe that to recycle IT equipment in this capacity is in line with our own environmental priorities and we support any opportunity to connect businesses with local communities in our quest to ensure that nobody is left behind.
