Education Team Update Q2 – our work with SEND schools

19 Jan 2023

The Education Team had a packed Autumn term organising, recruiting volunteers and delivering employability events and workshops in special schools for the We Discover project

Our ‘We Discover’ employability sessions delivery has shifted up a gear since October. We recruited 13 volunteers from business who partnered with 9 special schools in the city and county to successfully deliver 8 events supporting 148 students with Special Educational Needs and Disability.

We have developed a bespoke programme of sessions for each school, focussed on employability and engaging with volunteers from business in order to improve students’ understanding of different types of work, industries and sectors and to help their transition to further education and employment.

During the term we ran a virtual careers fair for all schools with volunteers from Asda, Alltruck and Leicester City in the Community giving talks. We ran 7 in-school events with volunteers from Salad Works, Leicester City Council, Hinckley and Rugby Building Society, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Walker and Son taking part in Speedy speaker careers talks and skills workshops, CV workshops and Guess my Job sessions.

A very happy hour at Birch Wood school. Where the young people had to guess my job, they got it after 15 minutes. A very diverse range of abilities amongst the young people but all were keen, friendly and appreciative, cannot recommend it enough. I am still glowing from the feel-good factor of such a positive and uplifting encounter.
