The Joining Up Joining In (JUJI) project aims to prevent young people from disadvantaged backgrounds being left behind and committing crimes.

Poverty is a key indicator to the types of young people who are at risk of, or have entered, into the criminal justice system, and Leicestershire Cares will engage these young people by skilled youth and community workers and encouraged and supported to develop soft and hard skills through one to one and creative group work.

This project will seek to use our grounded experience and networks so we can support these young people developing key skills and confidence that will move them away from offending and into the world of education, employment and training, the project will benefit from the strong links we have with both the business and community sector.

The young people we are targeting face a complex interlocking web of disadvantage, with most being isolated from family, living in temp and insecure accommodation, and having dependency issues as well as mental health issues a high percentage may also be parents themselves. They are also at risk of being exploited by “county lines” gangs.

Our links with business and community groups and networks means we can pull in a wide range of volunteers as well as offer these young people work experience in volunteer placements. We also enjoy excellent working relationships with relevant statutory agencies.

We are particularly keen to work with care experienced young people, it is estimated 24/27% of prison population has a care background. There are 585 looked after children (LAC) and 418 care leavers across LLR.213 care leavers in Leicester, 196 in Leicestershire and 9 in Rutland that are in touch with Local Authorities (records only to 21 years of age. Leicestershire Cares works with ceyp up to 25).

Joining Up Joining In is funded by The Office ofLeicestershire 2020 s the Police & Crime Commissioner for Leicestershre
