Leicestershire Cares' support for ex-offenders continues through lockdown

15 Apr 2020

During these unprecedented times, Leicestershire Cares’ UP and WIRE projects have risen to the challenge and continue to provide support to participants by phone and online. Some participants initially found it difficult to adapt, but now we have a new way of working and supporting individuals with a history of or who are at risk of offending.

Both projects have delivered online mock interviews, employability workshops, online discussions and group chats. Alongside this, we have established additional support for participants during these challenging times:

> Both projects continue to accept referrals and hold telephone interviews for all new participants.

> The UP Project has been hard at work sourcing accommodation for participants most in need and continue to submit referrals to several agencies in and around Leicester and Leicestershire.

> The UP Project have partnered up with NACRO to support housing needs establish a strong referral process. Staff continue to support participants to actively bid for immediately available properties using online platforms.

> We have strong links with several food banks in and around Leicester and Leicestershire which offer collection and delivery service to our participants. Most recently, Naeem Bisco and the Zinthiya Trust have been working with us and we thank them very much for their continued support.

> We have regular telephone and video link contact with UP participants and have been creating weekly To Do lists for them to work thorough to remain occupied during these uncertain times.

> We continue to offer 1-2-1 support for job applications and CV building. This has proven to be a positive use of lockdown time, with several UP and WIRE participants now in possession of an updated CV.

> The WIRE project has been working hard to identify employers who are continuing to recruit and can offer opportunities to both WIRE and UP participants.

> Participants who have no access to the internet have been provided with a Data Sim card so they can participate in online activities delivered by all the projects at Leicestershire Cares.

> We have partnered with Buddhi to create videos to support mental health and wellbeing during the lockdown. These will be created soon and will cover:

  • Mindfulness
  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Guided Meditation
  • How to get motivated / schedule your day
