Mud, sweat but no tears as firm digs to a million

When staff from member firm Ford and Slater got their hands very dirty clearing a ditch at the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre they passed a huge £1 million milestone.

More than £1 million worth of time has now been donated by employee volunteers since the first Leicestershire Cares Team Challenges in the year 2000 – more than 460 community groups have been helped by 5,500 workers giving 36,000 hours of their time.

Staff from member firm Ford and Slater, armed with spades, forks and loppers, helped to clear the drainage ditch at the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre in the city.

The day-long Team Challenge on February 5th saw 7 employees get down and dirty to move silt, soil and other debris from the drainage channel which run through the activity site, helping to alleviate flooding of the grounds from the nearby River Soar.

“Being located just metres from the river means we experience flooding every year and often have to close parts of the site for several weeks whilst we wait for the water to run off. As a result we experience disruption to groups and school bookings which is disappointing for everyone and can mean we lose valuable income.

“The team has worked exceptionally hard today and I’m confident we’ll see the results pay off in the next few weeks as the weather will likely worsen and the river level rise once again.”

Ed Sibson, LOPC Manager

“We love a good, physical challenge and this has certainly been one. I’m really proud of how hard everyone has worked and we hope we’ve made a real impact on the site for a few years to come. We may well be back to take part in some of the adventure activities here too.”

Jackie Penney, Team Leader

“Ford and Slater always pull out all the stops when it comes to team challenges so we’re thrilled they are helping us mark this significant milestone of employee volunteering for Leicestershire Cares.

“We’re incredibly proud of all the time and hard work that thousands of our Cares volunteers have given over the past 15 years and we know this has made a big impact to communities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.”

Katharine Lightbown, Community Development Coordinator
