On December 13th 2007, 80 employees from Mars UK Ltd went out into the County to bring some festive cheer through volunteering. Members of the Mars Food Team split in to seven groups, each one completing a team challenge at community groups throughout Leicester and Leicestershire, delivering food parcels and entertaining members of the community. Trish Smith, Mars Foodservice Customer Marketing Manager, and one of the key event organisers said:

“We are delighted to continue to make such a difference to people in Leicestershire through our Volunteering Christmas Challenge day.  It is a really fun event and everyone involved enjoyed the experience. Giving something back at Christmas time will make this Christmas very special for all of us.”

The Castle Donington Volunteer Centre enjoyed high tea served by the volunteers, who also decorated the centre and provided entertainment for members of the Age Concern Club, the Stroke Club, and the Visually Impaired Club. Children and families at Border House in Leicester enjoyed Christmas craft activities such as card-making, decorating gingerbread men, and they also received food parcels. Across the county in Melton Mowbray, families at Home Start enjoyed a more festive environment as Mars volunteers decorated the hall for their Christmas party, whilst Leicester Aids Support also be received food parcels from the volunteers. Glebe House in Loughborough provides residential and day services for people with learning disabilities; children and elderly residents were entertained by Mars volunteers, with activities such as quizzes, bingo and a disco for the younger children. Volunteers also entertained residents of New Wycliffe Home for the Blind, putting on a mixture of carols, stories and singing.

The enthusiasm and imagination of the volunteers prompted fantastic responses from the  community groups and residential homes involved. See below to see what they said…

“For me, I won’t forget the service user who left the building with her bag, with tears streaming down her face, saying that this would be her best Christmas ever. She just couldn’t believe what she had been given.”  Without your generosity, we would not have been able to provide some of the poorest and ill people in Leicester and Leicestershire with food that helps improve their well being and where a good diet is essential to keep their HIV stable”

Jenny Hinds, project manager at  LASS ( Leicester Aids Support Services)

“The team challenge enabled some elderly/disabled clients to get out and socialize with others. This raised their morale and led to a very enjoyable afternoon which would probably be spent alone if the challenge had not been arranged. I would like to thank the MARS team on behalf of those who attended for their care and attention to detail in providing a wonderful afternoon. The warm welcome they received and the wonderful food which was prepared freshly and beautifully presented contributed to a lovely time for everyone. All the comments I received were very positive.”

Julie Logan of Castle Donnington Volunteer Centre

The challenge was a huge success and gave the children some much needed fun! It allowed them to spend some time with people who had no other commitments for the day and who could focus their full attention to them. They made really nice keepsakes with their handprints on that they have given to their parents. Overall the day was a huge success giving parents much needed respite and allowing children to have fun, which is so important to their well being particularly considering the difficulties of living in temporary accommodation”

“A huge amount of thanks for all the time, effort and energy that went into the day – particularly Wendy Wing who organized the day with us. We all had loads of fun and feedback from our service users has been really positive about the event”

Gill Taylor, Assistant Manager, Border House

“Everyone involved in the team challenge was very enthusiastic, keen, motivated and thoughtful about the needs of the clients. They ensured that everyone had a good time”

“The visit from the team from MARS created a brilliant Christmas atmosphere and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who was present”
